A Specifier's Guide to Outdoor Suitability

Pressed metal is not appropriate for every covered outdoor space. "Protected" is not binary; a twelve-inch overhang in coastal New Hampshire is a fundamentally different exposure condition than a deep covered porch in central Tennessee. This page is a working guide to evaluating a specific site; the variables that determine whether a project is appropriate, and the conditions that disqualify it, regardless of how the space is described.


Shanko manufactures pressed steel tiles finished with industrial powder-coat. The steel performs reliably when moisture contact is incidental and temporary; it performs poorly when contact is sustained, cyclic, or when dissolved chlorides are present from salt air or road salt. The powder-coat handles UV exposure and ambient humidity; it does not compensate for direct or recurring water contact.

Overhang Depth and Wind Exposure

The single most important variable in any covered outdoor application is how effectively the overhead structure shields the ceiling plane from wind-driven rain. A porch roof with a twelve-inch overhang on a wind-exposed elevation is not equivalent to a deep covered porch set back from the prevailing weather direction.


Evaluate the structure's alignment with the site's prevailing wind. If the opening faces into prevailing weather and the overhang is shallow, that ceiling will receive intermittent moisture even under a solid roof. Deep porches (overhangs of three feet or more) oriented away from prevailing wind are the most reliable outdoor applications. A fully screened enclosure is more forgiving regardless of overhang depth.

Climate Zone

Ambient humidity alone is not a disqualifier. High-humidity climates (coastal Southeast, Gulf Coast, etc,) are generally acceptable when structural coverage is adequate; ambient humidity does not cause the sustained surface moisture that leads to corrosion.


Freeze-thaw cycling is a more significant concern. In climates with regular freezing temperatures, any moisture that penetrates joints or accumulates behind panels can expand, leading to finish failure at seams. This is not a material deficiency specific to steel; it affects all panel systems installed in freeze-thaw conditions. The response is in the specification: proper joint treatment, stainless fasteners, sealed cut edges, and backer material that drains rather than retains moisture. Coastal Salt Air

Salt air accelerates corrosion in ferrous metals. In coastal applications (within roughly a mile of salt water) powder-coated steel requires more careful specification than in inland locations. The powder coat itself is protective; the vulnerability is at any point where the coating is interrupted. Every cut edge, drilled hole, and fastener penetration in a coastal installation should be treated with a zinc-based rust-inhibiting primer before panels go up.


This does not disqualify coastal projects; it defines how they must be specified. Shanko tiles have been successfully installed in coastal covered environments. The specification must account for exposure.

Conditions That Disqualify a Site

Certain conditions disqualify an application regardless of how the space is categorized:

Direct precipitation contact

Any condition where the ceiling surface will receive direct rain or snow exposure is not appropriate for pressed metal tile.

Ceiling acts as part of the roof assembly

Installations where the ceiling is effectively part of the roof assembly, with no air gap and a direct water drainage path

Unenclosed structures without overhead protection

Unenclosed structures without meaningful overhead protection: open pergolas, trellises, shade sails, and lattice structures

Standing moisture or trapped humid air

Environments with sustained standing moisture, including poorly drained soffits or ceiling cavities that trap humid air without circulation

The Honest Assessment

The question to ask about any outdoor application is not "is this technically outside?" but "will this ceiling surface regularly contact water?" If the answer is no, if the structure genuinely protects the ceiling plane and the climate doesn't create conditions that overwhelm a good powder-coat and correct fastener selection, pressed metal is a durable and appropriate material.
