Specifying Shanko for Protected Exterior Applications

Covered outdoor installations require more precise specifications than interior work. The difference between a pressed metal ceiling that performs for decades on a covered porch and one that fails within a few years is almost always a specification decision, not a material limitation. This page covers the decisions: finish selection, substrate, fasteners, edge treatment, and ventilation. All guidance below is specific to Shanko pressed steel with an industrial powder-coat finish.

Finish Selection

Shanko's standard powder-coat line is appropriate for covered outdoor applications. Within that line, outdoor specifications should favor:

Lighter colors over dark

Dark powder-coat finishes absorb significantly more solar heat in partially exposed conditions, which accelerates thermal cycling at fastener points and panel seams. Whites, creams, and soft grays reduce this effect and are historically appropriate for most porch and soffit applications. Shanko's White, Antique White, and Silver finishes are the most commonly specified for outdoor use.

Matte and satin sheens over gloss

Matte and satin finishes show weathering, minor surface variation, and cleaning marks less than high-gloss. For outdoor applications where humidity is a factor, lower-sheen finishes present fewer long-term maintenance concerns.

Standard catalog colors over custom

Shanko's standard powder-coat colors are formulated and tested for durability. Custom color matches vary in UV resistance and should be reviewed with Shanko directly before specifying in outdoor conditions.

For coastal applications within approximately one mile of salt water

All cut edges and fastener penetrations should be treated with a zinc-based rust-inhibiting primer before installation. The powder-coat surface is the protection; raw steel exposed during cutting or drilling is the vulnerability.
