Secretary of the Interior Guidelines and Tin Ceilings

The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation are the governing framework for any federally reviewed historic preservation project in the United States. They are also the reference standard used by most State Historic Preservation Offices and many local historic district commissions, even when federal tax credits are not involved. For architects and project managers working on historic buildings with pressed metal ceilings, understanding how these standards apply to ceiling replacement is essential before a single tile is specified.

The Standards do not prescribe specific materials. They establish principles, and the core principle relevant to ceiling restoration is that “replacement materials should match the original in design, color, texture, and, where possible, material”. Shanko knows that that deceptively simple language means a lot of work in practice.
